子路問於孔子曰:「君子亦有憂乎?」子曰:「無也.君子之修行也,其未得之,則樂其意,既得之,又樂其治,是以有終身之樂,無一日之憂.小人則不然,其未得也,患弗得之,既得之,又恐失之,是以有終身之憂,無一日之樂也.」
曾子弊衣而耕於魯,魯君聞之而致邑焉,曾子固辭不受.或曰:「非子之求,君自致之,奚固辭也?」曾子曰:「吾聞受人施者常畏人,與人者常驕人,縱君有賜,不我驕也,吾豈能勿畏乎?」孔子聞之曰:「參之言足以全其節也.」
孔子厄於陳蔡,從者七日不食.子貢以所齎貨,竊犯圍而出,告糴於野人,得米一石焉,顏回仲由炊之於壤屋之下,有埃墨墮飯中,顏回取而食之,子貢自井望見之,不悅,以為竊食也.入問孔子曰:「仁人廉士,窮改節乎?」孔子曰:「改節即何稱於仁義哉?」子貢曰:「若回也,其不改節乎?」子曰:「然.」子貢以所飯告孔子.子曰:「吾信回之為仁久矣,雖汝有云,弗以疑也,其或者必有故乎.汝止,吾將問之.」召顏回曰:「疇昔予夢見先人,豈或啟祐我哉?子炊而進飯,吾將進焉.」對曰:「向有埃墨墮飯中,欲置之則不潔,欲棄之則可惜,回即食之,不可祭也.」孔子曰:「然乎,吾亦食之.」顏回出,孔子顧謂二三子曰:「吾之信回也,非待今日也.」二三子由此乃服之.
